New Delhi, which is one of the leading destinations for higher education in the country, houses the highest number of 'fake' colleges offering engineering and other technical courses.

According to the Union Human Resource Development Ministry, there are around 277 engineering colleges in India, which have been functioning without the approval from the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE).

A document tabled in the Lok Sabha by Minister of State for Human Resource Development Satya Pal Singh says that New Delhi has 66 fake educational institutes.

Singh also said that the University Grants Commission (UGC) is monitoring the issue. It has directed the heads of states to take action against fake institutes.
