The youths of Kerala seem to have abandoned traditional ways to celebrate harvest festival Onam as some adhered to modern and controversial forms of festivity this year.

Notwithstanding the death of 20-year-old Thenzi Basheer of College of Engineering (CET) in Thiruvananthapuram, the students of IHRD at Adoor crossed all limits by hiring Fire and Rescue Services tanker, KSRTC bus, JCB, tractor and lorry as part of their Onam celebrations on Saturday, 22 August.

The students took part in the procession in these vehicles, and they even splashed water from the fire force tanker while dancing on the road, disrupting the flow of traffic.

Seven fire and safety officers, T Gopakumar, B Yesudasan, PT Dileep, S Somarajan, N Rajan and K Syamkumar, have been reportedly suspended for misusing the vehicle.

The visuals of the celebrations have been shared online and the students were criticised by many for their modern ways of Onam celebrations, reportedly inspired from movies.

While many students came dressed like Nivin Pauly in "Premam", others copied Mammootty ("Rajamanikyam") and Jayasurya ("Aadu - Oru Bheegara Jeevi Aanu").

However, the Onam celebrations by the final year (mechanical) students at Sree Buddha College of Engineering, Nooranad, have shed positive light on the brother-sister relationship. A photo featuring a girl with 136 boys of the college's mechanical batch has been doing the rounds on social media. She is reportedly the only girl in the class and has been labelled as one of the safest girl in the state.

Another photo of students of Mar Baselious Institute of Technology and Sciences, Kothamangalam, also shows a girl, the only female of the batch, posing with her 134 brothers.
