The Mangosteen fruit, which is known as Mangustan in Hindi, is titled as the "queen of tropical fruits" by American botanist and plant explorer David Fairchild. He is the founder of Purple Mangosteen, about which he mentioned in his book published in 1903 - Exploring for Plants.

Originating in Indonesia, this tropical fruit looks beautiful. Its peel is dark purple in colour and on peeling, it appears like orange. It has softly fragmented edible white flesh with a sweet and sour taste and also contains some bitter seeds.

If the fruit is not consumed immediately, its outer covering tends to grow harder due to lack of water. One would then need a knife to cut the fruit open. This fruit is cultivated in humid regions which receive ample rainfall. In India, it is cultivated in Kerela, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
