Sonam Kapoor's "Neerja" has proved that good content can rule the box office irrespective of the presence of big star power. This Sonam-starrer recorded a phenomenal three-day box office income in India as well as the international market.

Domestic box office

The third day box office figure of "Neerja" is double the opening day collection. Ram Madhvani's directorial film minted Rs 9.71 crore Sunday, compared to Rs 4.70 crore Friday.

"Neerja," which is based on the real-life story of flight attendant Neerja Bhanot, had a terrific opening weekend at the domestic box office, with Rs 22.01 crore collection. The first weekend collection of "Neerja" is the third highest, after Akshay's "Airlift" and Sunny Deol's "Ghayal Once Again." The opening weekend figure is good due to its Saturday and Sunday's income. After a slow start, the occupancy doubled second day onwards.

"#Neerja goes from strength to strength. Fri 4.70 cr, Sat 7.60 cr, Sun 9.71 cr. Total: ₹ 22.01 cr. India biz. FAB! #ContentIsKing," trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, adding: "#Neerja is FLYING HIGH. Day-wise growth in biz clearly indicates it has won hearts and conquered the box-office. Sun biz was TERRIFIC..."

"With an IMPRESSIVE weekend total on hand, #Neerja is expected to dominate on weekdays too, with metros/plexes contributing HANDSOMELY...#Neerja is a shining example of a BRILLIANT film backed by well-planned and executed distribution strategy and superb marketing," he added.

"Neerja" was released in around 700 theaters Feb.19, along with four small budget movies, but other releases did not have any effect on the theatrical run of the Sonam-starrer. "Neerja" dominated the box office over the weekend and is expected to rule in its first week as well.

"Neerja" also had a phenomenal run at the overseas box office. The three-day overseas box office collection of "Neerja" is the highest ever for a female centric film. The Sonam-starrer recorded $1.56 million (Rs 10.70 crore) from its opening weekend run.

"#Neerja has a SUPERB opng wknd Overseas: $ 1.56 mn [₹ 10.70 cr]. Highest female-centric, 15 rated film. Best in USA-Canada and UAE-GCC," box office analyst Adarsh tweeted.

The worldwide box office collection of "Neerja" stands at Rs 32.71 crore after three days, and now it is inching towards Rs 50 crore mark. The film is enjoying a good run in India and internationally, and should put an excellent first week box office income.
