In a major reshuffle of Governors and Lieutenant Governors across the country, the Central government on Thursday night appointed Jishnu Dev Varma as the new Governor of Maharashtra. The appointments were announced through an official statement issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The development comes nearly six months after the post of Maharashtra Governor fell vacant following the resignation of C. P. Radhakrishnan in September 2025. Radhakrishnan stepped down after being elected Vice President of India. Since then, Acharya Devvrat, the Governor of Gujarat, had been holding the additional charge of Maharashtra.

Dev Varma, who had been serving as the Governor of Telangana since July 2024, will now assume office in Maharashtra.

A senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party from Tripura, Dev Varma is also a member of the state's historic Manikya royal family. Born on August 15, 1957, in Agartala, he studied English literature at the University of Calcutta. His father, Ramendra Kishore Debbarma, served in the royal administration of Tripura.

Before assuming gubernatorial responsibilities, Dev Varma was a prominent figure in Tripura politics. He served as the Deputy Chief Minister of Tripura from 2018 to 2023 in the BJP-led governments headed by Biplab Kumar Deb and later Manik Saha. During this period, he also represented the Charilam constituency in the Tripura Legislative Assembly.

Within the BJP, Dev Varma has been regarded as an important bridge between the party and indigenous communities in the northeastern state. He has also remained active in cultural and literary circles and has authored several books.

His appointment as Governor places him at the helm of one of India's most politically significant states, where the Governor's office often plays a crucial role in coalition-era political developments.
