The first couple of seasons of the CW's "The Vampire Diaries" explored the relationship dynamics between the Salvatore brothers – Damon and Stefan (Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley) – and Nina Dobrev's Elena.
Although Elena was constantly torn between her feelings for Damon and Stefan, she finally realised her feelings for Damon was stronger, and they started dating. However, their happiness did not last long as Damon was forced to say goodbye to his ladylove in the season 6 finale.
The season ended with Kai (Chris Wood) casting a sleeping spell on Elena and linking her life to Kat Graham's Bonnie's in such a way that Elena will not wake up as long as Bonnie lived.
This means Elena won't be a part of Damon's life for at least the next six decades, and the upcoming season will see how he manages to get through the long years before he reunites with Elena.
It is guaranteed that Damon won't be the level-headed vampire he was when Elena was around. But will he remain faithful to Elena for six decades? It remains unlikely, and Somerhalder recently sparked speculation of Damon hooking up Stefan's girlfriend Caroline (Candice Accola) when he envisioned the possibility of Stefan and Caroline's alleged baby actually belonging to Damon.
"Why does it have to Stefan? Maybe it's Damon," Somerhalder asked during an interview with E!Online.
Somerhalder was clearly joking about the possibility of Damon hooking up with Caroline, considering she is currently involved with his brother. In the previous season when Stefan appeared unsure of his feelings for Caroline, it was Damon who convinced him to consider a future with Caroline.
However, it's possible the Damon's character might undergo a transformation in season 7, and it won't be unlike him to mess up a lot of relationships.
"That's what I'm very excited about," Somerhalder told Entertainment Weekly in May. "Season 1 and 2 of the show is where people fell in love with this guy; it's where I fell in love with this guy."
"The story is just going to change form and I think that we get to go back to this really awesome dark, edgy, volatile [story]—all the s–t that we all love," he added.
"The Vampire Diaries" will return to the CW in October.
