3,500 US Troops Deployed to the Middle East
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) has confirmed the arrival of a task force of approximately 3,500 Marines and sailors in its area of responsibility. These forces are deployed aboard the USS Tripoli (LHA-7), an America-class amphibious assault ship that serves as the flagship of the Tripoli Amphibious Ready Group and the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit.
This unit includes transport aircraft, strike fighters, and amphibious assault capabilities, enabling it to conduct both sea-based strikes and limited ground operations. The deployment forms part of a broader US military build-up linked to the ongoing tensions with Iran.
Amphibious forces like those aboard the USS Tripoli are typically used for rapid-response missions, such as securing strategic locations, carrying out evacuations, and launching assaults on coastal targets. Additional deployments are reportedly under consideration to further enhance operational readiness in the region.
Pentagon Considers Ground Operation Scenarios
According to US media reports, the Pentagon is assessing the possibility of ground operations in Iran that could last several weeks. While a full-scale invasion remains unlikely, officials suggest that any such action would likely involve targeted raids by Special Operations forces, supported by conventional infantry units.
These operations would carry significant risks, including threats from Iranian drones, missile strikes, ground fire, and improvised explosive devices.
Potential for Further Troop Deployments
A report by The Wall Street Journal states that the Pentagon is considering deploying up to 10,000 additional ground troops to the Middle East. These could include infantry and armoured units, adding to the approximately 5,000 Marines and thousands of paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division already stationed in the region.
The forces are expected to be positioned within striking distance of key Iranian sites, including Kharg Island, a vital oil export hub.
Despite the growing military build-up, US officials have issued mixed signals about the direction of the conflict. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated that Washington may achieve its objectives without deploying ground troops. However, reports suggest that planning for potential escalation is already well advanced, indicating that military options remain firmly on the table.
