Massive explosions rocked the city of Isfahan in Iran early Tuesday, according to media reports. Donald Trump shared a video showing a series of blasts lighting up the night sky and triggering fires, although he did not specify the location. Reports suggest the footage may be linked to a joint US-Israel strike on a major ammunition depot in the city, though the clip remains unverified.
Isfahan, home to around 2.3 million people, is a key strategic hub and houses the Badr military airbase. According to The Wall Street Journal, a US official said the strike involved 2,000-pound bunker-buster bombs, with a large number of penetrator munitions used. The initial blast reportedly triggered multiple secondary explosions, sending fireballs into the sky and shaking the ground.
There are also unconfirmed reports that Iran may have moved about 540 kg of highly enriched uranium to an underground facility in Isfahan. The WSJ has previously reported that the US is considering a military operation to secure such material, a move that could significantly escalate the conflict and potentially involve American forces on the ground. There have also been claims of a possible ground invasion.
Trump has further escalated rhetoric, warning that the US could target Iran's oil and energy infrastructure if a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz is not reached soon. The US and Israel have justified their actions by claiming Iran is close to developing a nuclear weapon, a claim not confirmed by international nuclear watchdogs.
Meanwhile, Iran and its allied groups, including Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis, have launched missiles and drones targeting Israel and Gulf countries. Explosions were reported near oil infrastructure in Haifa, while an Iranian strike reportedly caused a fire on a Kuwaiti oil tanker near Dubai Port. Kuwait's military said its air defence systems were actively responding to incoming missile and drone threats.
