At least 14 people were killed and 17 others injured when a tempo fell into a deep gorge in Jammu's Udhampur district on Tuesday morning.

Five women and a child are among the deceased passengers, according to a The Tribune report.

The accident occurred in Dalsar area of Udhampur when the tempo was on its way from Ghordi village to Ramnagar town in Udhampur district.

Earlier, 12 people were reported to have been killed in the accident that is said to have happened when the driver lost control of the vehicle.

"Twelve people were killed when a mini-bus went out of the driver's control and plunged into a deep gorge in the hilly area," a police officer told IANS.

Rescue operation is underway at the accident site.
