Workers protest against nationwide strike call by Bangladesh Nationalist Party

Dhaka, Jan 22 (ANI): Workers of Bangladesh's garment industry and transport department on Thursday protested against the 48-hour nationwide strike call given by opposition, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), in Dhaka. Shouting slogans against BNP, the workers condemned the countrywide strike. Angry protestors demonstrated outside the office of BNP president and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. The BNP also enforced a nationwide transport blockade which entered its third consecutive week. The political unrest began on January 05 when BNP boycotted election anniversary. The BNP and its allies had boycotted the election that was held in January 05, 2014 which was marred by deadly unrest. Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina held to her stance that a fresh poll can be called only if her rivals halt violence. President of garment workers league, Lima Ferdous, said that the strike had resulted in huge losses for the daily labourers.

More than 1,000 people participate in walkathon in Vizag

Visakhapatnam, Jan 22 (ANI): More than 1,000 people from all walks of life took part in a walkathon on Thursday morning (January 22) in Visakhapatnam as part of an energy conservation campaign. Oil and Gas Conservation Fortnight (OGCF), 2015 is being observed by several public sector oil companies. OGCF is an initiative of Petroleum Conservation and Research Association (PCRA) and oil PSUs to create mass awareness regarding the importance of energy conservation by involving all sections of the society, including school children. With the launch of the national level fortnight-long programme, intensive campaigns are being undertaken to drive home the point of oil and gas conservation.

Yemen's President ready to accept demands of Houthis to end standoff

New Delhi, Jan 22 (ANI): Yemen's President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi expressed readiness to accept Houthi demands for power-sharing after two days of battle. Reportedly, the rebels have agreed to release the President and withdraw their militias from government institutions if their demands are fulfilled. According to their demands, the rebel Houthi movement will have more say in the affairs of the Yemen. The Shiite Houthi rebels had seized the presidential palace and surrounded President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi's home. Hadi himself was unharmed. Reports suggest, that the government and Houthi rebels have reached a tentative deal. Further reports are awaited.

Security forces arrest two hardcore rebels in Jharkhand

Gumla, Jan 22 (ANI): Security forces arrested two hardcore Maoists in a major offensive against rebels in Jharkhand, a senior police official said. Several arms, bullets and various mobile phones were recovered from their hideout. Meanwhile, a security personnel allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service rifle in Gumla district. The deceased security personnel was identified as Ashish Thapa. It was not immediately known what caused Thapa to commit suicide. Police have found no suicide note.

Professionals design unmanned aerial vehicle to aid in surveillance

Kanpur, Jan 22 (ANI): Professors of a prestigious technology institute in Kanpur claimed to have developed a portable unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) which could help security forces patrol better in border areas. It could also prove handy to police in monitoring traffic and other issues. Designers said the light UAV fitted with cameras could fly at a very low height to keep vigil in sensitive areas. It could also be used to keep an eye on wildlife in jungles, frequently targeted by poachers. They said it could also help security forces in their fight against Maoist rebels. The UAV can be carried in a bag. The attached wings on both sides of UAV can be detached and carried anywhere to make it handy for police and security personnel. Run on gasoline and solid fuel, the UAV can fly non-stop for 10 hours.

PM Modi launches 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' campaign

Panipat, Jan 22 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday launched the 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' campaign for the survival, protection and education of the girl child. The campaign aims to address the issue of declining Child Sex Ratio (CSR) through a mass campaign across the country targeted at changing societal mindsets and creating awareness about the criticality of the issue. It will have focused intervention and multi-sectoral action in 100 districts with low Child Sex Ratio. It will be a major inter-ministerial initiative of the Government of India bringing together Ministries, institutions and civil societies in a rational effort to reverse the declining sex ratio. The Union Ministry of Women and Child Development will be nodal ministry and will be assisted by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Ministry of Human Resource Development and Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in this endeavour.

SC asks BCCI to conduct fresh elections within 6 weeks, refrains Srinivasan from contesting

New Delhi, Jan 22 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the BCCI to conduct fresh elections within 6 weeks and also refrained former BCCI President N Srinivasan from contesting. While asking Srinivasan to choose between Chennai Super Kings and BCCI chief's post, the Supreme Court held guilty his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan and Raj Kundra for betting in the IPL scam. The SC has barred Srinivasan from contesting elections till such time he had commercial interest in cricket. The apex court also struck down the controversial 6.2.4 clause that allows BCCI officials to own IPL teams and have commercial interests.

India says banning JuD, Haqqani network under US pressure does not show Pak's commitment against t

New Delhi, Jan 22 (ANI): India on Thursday said that banning Jamaat-ud-Dawa and Haqqani network under the pressure of the United States does not show Pakistan's commitment against terrorism in any way. Security Expert Alok Bansal said that it is welcome step but only if Pakistan keeps banning other such outfits which emerge in the nation. BJP Spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said that this does not show that Pakistan is committed to work against terrorism. Earlier in a paradigm shift in its policy against terrorism, Pakistan has included Jamaat-ud-Dawa (Jud) led by the 2008 Mumbai attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed and the dreaded Haqqani network in the list of proscribed organisations after the US mounted pressure on the country.
