Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has used his speech at the European Parliament to praise the EU, and urge the Union to join his country in leading the world economy. Trudeau addressed MEPs on 16 February in Strasbourg, France, to mark the signing of the Ceta trade deal between the EU and Canada.

But after the interview, it was reported Western Australia One Nation candidate Michelle Meyers claimed the push for marriage equality in Australia was propagated by a Nazi-era “mind control program” and abortion was creating “societies of cannibals”.

US President Donald Trump welcomed Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to the White House on 13 February, the first meeting between the two leaders since Trump took office. Donald Trump has pledged to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement among Canada, the United States and Mexico. At a news conference on Friday, Trudeau said he would look to defend and demonstrate Canadian values, but do so respectfully and not from an ideological standpoint.

Former German Vice-Chancellor Frank-Walter Steinmeier has been elected as the new German president. The Social Democrat received 931 of 1,260 votes in parliament. The German president holds little executive power but has representative duties. Steinmeier will succeed Joachim Gauck, who stepped down after serving one five-year term.
