Dussehra or Vijaya Dashami celebrates the victory of good over evil. Hindus observe the day through special prayer meetings and food offerings to the goddess Durga, who is considered as Shakti or cosmic energy. Legend has it, when demon King, Mahishasur, vanquished the gods, their king, Indra, approached the Holy Trinity, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. They in turn sought the help of the divine mother Durga who, equipped with lethal weapons fought with Mahishasur for nine days and nights and eventually killed him on the tenth day. And thus every year, people across the country celebrate the day as Dusshera. Be it Jammu & Kashmir or Uttar Pradesh, everywhere goddess Durga bind together Hindus and Muslims with the thread of communal amity. Muslims in Aligarh make the effigies of goddess Durga with equal fervour and devotion. Dusshera in Doda region of Jammu & Kashmir is celebrated in different manner. As the occasion is also believed to be the day when Lord Rama vanquished the ten-headed demon king Ravana.
