Sri Lanka President willing to pardon 5 Tamil fishermen on death row, politicos react

New Delhi, Nov 12 (ANI): Politicos in India welcomed the Sri Lankan government's decision to free Indian fishermen on death row in the island country without any conditions. However, Sri Lankan Minister Prabha Ganesan told Indian High Commission officials in Colombo that for this to happen, Indian has to withdraw the appeal filed in the Supreme Court against the High Court verdict. If India withdraws the appeal, President Mahinda Rajapaksa would pardon the Indian fishermen awarded death for alleged drug trafficking without any pre-conditions.

PM Modi meets Thailand PM Prayut Chan-o-Cha

Myanmar, Nov 12 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday met the Prime Minister of Thailand Prayut Chan-o-Cha in Myanmar's Capital Nay Pyi Taw. Delegation level talks were held between both countries after which Modi expressed confidence that under the leadership of Chan-o-cha relations between India and Thailand will improve. Polling officers get training on electronic voting machine ahead of JandK Assembly polls

Poonch, Nov 12 (ANI): Around 1000 polling officers were given hands-on training on the electronic voting machine (EVM) ahead of the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. The Election Commission of India has already announced the dates for assembly elections in Kashmir. The polls will be held in five-phases, beginning on November 25 and ending on December 20. The counting of votes will take place on December 23. Nodal officer and district election trainer, Vijay Puri said the polling officers were asked to conduct free and fair elections. Meanwhile, district election officer, Poonch district, Mohammad Hussain Malik, said the Polling officers have been instructed about their overall responsibilities.

Indian security forces launch massive anti-Maoist drive in poll-bound Jharkhand

Gumla, Nov 12 (ANI): Indian security forces have launched a massive anti-Maoist operation in poll-bound Jharkhand to prevent any untoward incident in the election process, stated a senior officer. Jharkhand police officials held a meeting with senior officials of neighbouring Chhattisgarh in one of the worst rebel-infested Gumla districts in the country, which will go to polls on November 25, to devise an effective plan. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police, Praveen Singh, assured that electorates wouldn’t feel threatened by the ultras. Maoists have called for boycott of the five-phased polls in Jharkhand that begins from November 25 and end on December 20. The results would be announced on December 23. Maoists have killed police and politicians and targeted government buildings in an insurgency that has killed thousands since the 1960s.

India files appeal in Sri Lankan court against fishermen death sentence

Nay Pyi Taw, Oct 12 (ANI): India has filed an appeal in the Sri Lankan Supreme Court against verdict of the high court that awarded death sentence to five Indian fishermen in the island nation in a drug smuggling case. Five Indian fishermen were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy in 2011 on charges of smuggling drugs and on October 30, the Colombo High Court held the five fishermen guilty of drug trafficking. Foreign ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin, while addressing mediapersons in Myanmar capital Nay Pyi Taw, said India was confident that justice would prevail in the case. The arrest of the fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy has been a major topic of debate between the two nations.

New Delhi, Nov 12 (ANI): The Congress sparked a controversy on Wednesday after it invited 15 political parties from other countries and "all like-minded political parties" for an international conference in Delhi to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, while skipping Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Congress did not invite the BJP or any of its allies. Many world leaders have reportedly confirmed participation.

PM Modi to attend 12th ASEAN-India Summit in Myanmar today

New Delhi, Nov 12 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be attending the 12th ASEAN -India Summit in Myanmar capital Nay Pyi Taw today. The Prime Minister arrived in Myanmar on Tuesday, following which he met with the country's President, Thein Sein. During their meeting, Prime Minister Modi and President Sein discussed the strengthening of ties between New Delhi and Nay Pyi Taw in the fields of culture, commerce and connectivity. Prime Minister Modi is also scheduled to meet with leaders of the East Asia Summit (EAS) nations during his visit.
