Top US Democrats have intensified pressure on Donald Trump over the ongoing Iran conflict, warning of rising economic costs, lack of clarity, and the risk of a prolonged war with no defined endgame. As the conflict enters its fourth week, political divisions in Washington have sharpened.

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer criticised the administration for failing to outline a clear strategy. Speaking on the Senate floor, he said the war had "no end in sight" and accused the White House of inconsistent messaging. He also linked the conflict to rising fuel costs, noting that US gasoline prices have surged sharply in just a month.

Other lawmakers echoed similar concerns. Congressman Greg Landsman said the military objectives had largely been achieved and called for an end to the operation, warning against deeper involvement or deployment of ground troops. Senator Peter Welch opposed a reported $200 billion funding request, cautioning against a "forever war" and highlighting the financial burden on American families, including higher fuel, fertiliser, and heating costs.

Congresswoman Sara Jacobs described the conflict as a major foreign policy failure, citing the absence of a clear plan and raising concerns about civilian harm and overall costs. The growing criticism reflects broader unease within Congress over the direction of US policy toward Iran.

Amid mounting domestic criticism, the US is also intensifying diplomatic outreach. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held calls with key global partners, including S. Jaishankar, Anita Anand, and William Ruto.

The discussions focused on the evolving situation in the Middle East, coordination on Iran, and broader security cooperation. Talks with India emphasised shared strategic priorities, while conversations with Canada addressed actions targeting Iran's nuclear programme. Rubio also thanked Kenya for its stance on Iran and its role in regional security and peacekeeping efforts, including support for stability initiatives in Haiti.

The flurry of diplomatic engagement highlights Washington's effort to align key partners across Asia, North America, and Africa on the Iran crisis and wider geopolitical challenges, even as domestic scrutiny of the conflict continues to grow.
