U.S. President Donald Trump marked his 80th birthday on Sunday by announcing a breakthrough agreement aimed at ending the war in Iran and hosting an unprecedented UFC mixed martial arts event on the South Lawn of the White House.
The president, who had been promoting the prospect of a peace deal for weeks, declared hours before the event that an agreement to end the conflict was "now complete." Trump said the United States would lift its naval blockade of Iran and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global oil transit route, potentially easing concerns over energy supplies and stabilising global markets.
While the announcement was welcomed as a major diplomatic development, key details of the agreement remain under negotiation.
The diplomatic breakthrough set the stage for an extraordinary evening at the White House, where more than 4,000 invited guests gathered around a temporary arena featuring the UFC's signature Octagon. Thousands more watched from nearby viewing areas as fighters competed in a spectacle rarely associated with the grounds of America's most famous residence.

Trump was joined by several top administration officials and Republican leaders, including FBI Director Kash Patel and House Speaker Mike Johnson. Polish President Karol Nawrocki was also seen attending the event.
Accompanied by UFC President Dana White, a longtime ally, Trump walked from the Oval Office to the Blue Room Balcony to inspect the setup before standing for the national anthem as fighter jets roared overhead. The crowd responded with chants of "USA! USA!"

The venue featured "The Claw," a massive metal structure equipped with lighting, sound systems and giant screens, transforming the South Lawn into a professional fight arena.
"This event is a one-of-one event, an incredible event. I love it," Dana White said during a promotional appearance at the Lincoln Memorial on Friday.

Trump linked the event to broader celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. However, the birthday spectacle also underscored his personal influence over both politics and popular culture. The significance of the event was such that the G7 summit schedule was adjusted to allow Trump to attend the White House festivities before departing for France for meetings with world leaders.
Despite the celebratory atmosphere, the weekend was not without controversy. Crews removed Trump's name from the Kennedy Center following a court ruling that found the naming decision inappropriate. Meanwhile, UFC Middleweight champion Sean Strickland was escorted away from the event venue by law enforcement officers under unclear circumstances.

Strickland, once a vocal supporter of Trump, recently claimed on social media that he had not been invited to participate because of his criticism of Israel, an allegation UFC officials denied.
Weather also threatened to disrupt the evening, with forecasts warning of thunderstorms and strong winds. The event's start was briefly delayed, though Dana White downplayed concerns.
"I'm sick and tired of hearing about the weather," White said before later acknowledging that future UFC events would likely be held indoors.
The celebration marked a dramatic departure from traditional presidential birthday observances, combining high-stakes diplomacy, political theatre and combat sports in a manner unlike anything previously seen at the White House.
