Three Indians injured as Iranian drone strike hits Fujairah oil zone; UAE activates air defences, schools go online

A massive fire erupted at the Fujairah Oil Industry Zone in the United Arab Emirates after Iranian drones struck the site, according to reports. Thick black smoke was seen rising from the area as emergency teams rushed to control the blaze. The attacks occurred amid an ongoing ceasefire, raising concerns over escalating tensions.

The UAE's Ministry of Defence confirmed that its air defence systems are actively engaging missile and drone attacks originating from Iran. It stated that the sounds heard across various parts of the country were due to interception operations involving ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones.

Authorities said the fire broke out following a drone strike, while multiple incoming threats were intercepted. The defence ministry confirmed that forces intercepted three missiles, while a fourth fell into the sea. Air defence systems continue to respond to ongoing threats.

At least three people were reportedly injured in the attack and taken to hospital. The Fujairah media office confirmed that Indian nationals were among those injured, with their condition described as moderate. Emergency teams remain at the site, working to contain the fire and assess the damage.

The attack follows the launch of "Project Freedom" by the US military, under which guided missile destroyers are escorting merchant vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. Fujairah currently serves as the UAE's only operational oil export zone, making it a critical energy hub.

The broader West Asia conflict has already claimed multiple Indian lives. So far, eight Indian nationals have been killed, while dozens more have been injured across the region. Previous incidents include casualties in Abu Dhabi, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Oman due to missile and drone attacks. One Indian citizen has also been reported missing.

Amid the escalating situation, the UAE's Ministry of Education has announced distance learning from May 5 to May 8, 2026, for students, teachers, and administrative staff across nurseries and all public and private schools nationwide. The move aims to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the educational community. Authorities said the situation will be reviewed on May 8, and the period may be extended if necessary.

Ameesha Patel Shares Travel Disruption Amid UAE Airspace Closure

Amid the escalating tensions, Ameesha Patel shared an update about her travel disruption due to the situation.

In a post on X, the actress said she was returning to Mumbai from New York on an Emirates flight, which was scheduled to land at Dubai International Airport as part of a connecting journey. However, due to fresh missile attacks, the UAE airspace was closed.

"We have now been diverted to Muscat and are awaiting further updates," she wrote, adding that she is praying for everyone's safety and hopes the ongoing conflict ends soon.
