Melissa Benoist as Supergirl
PR Handout

Supergirl Season 4 returns on October 14 and not without some exciting developments. The titles of the first four episodes are out – American Alien, Fallout, Man of Steel, Ahimsa – and it's an easy guess that Supergirl's (Melissa Benoist) Kryptonian cousin Kal-El a.k.a Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) will make an appearance.

Will it be a recurring role or just an episode that will have Superman hit the National City skies? Well, there are theories that hint that it could very well be an on-and-off kind of thing.

How will Superman return?

An anti-alien movement has simmered down over these years and it is about time that the makers brought it to the forefront as one of its vital plot devices.

The trailer, dropped at the San Diego Comic Con 2018, introduced Agent Liberty (Sam Witwer) who is a believer of the human-first world order. He is completely ruthless in his approach towards dealing with extraterrestrials. Superman may step in at this point to assist his sister along with the DEO officials.

The man of steel may also be seen as someone who is simply chatting up his cousin trying to understand what went down when Krypton exploded.

In the previous season, the viewers were treated with the idea that not all is lost in that planet and Argo city has survived the blast, hanging on somewhere in the universe. The brother-sister duo might need to talk this piece of information out and see what good can come of it and what all can be salvaged.

Last year Hoechlin had teased the idea that he may be returning to the show but didn't quite confirm it. He seemed excited at the possibility of being able to join the Supergirl team another time though. So, it looks like scenes involving Superman may happen after all.

In other news, the makers have decided on introducing a transgender character in her early 20s, Nia Nal, who will join Cat Co's investigative reporters' team. This is good as it will allow the viewers a peek inside the company and also a chance to see Kara take on the world of journalism. Her career sort of hit a dead end after she went full power at criminals who tried laying waste on the city.
