Sourav Ganguly's rise in cricket administration continues, with the former Indian captain all set to take over as the new Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president.

Reports on Wednesday had suggested Ganguly was favourite to succeed Jagmohan Dalmiya as the new president of Bengal's cricket association, and now it has been as good as confirmed after the West Bengal chief minister announced that the India legend will take his place at the helm.

All that remains now is for the CAB governing body to officially approve the proposal, but that looks like a mere formality, with Ganguly's position as the joint secretary set to be taken by Dalmiya's son Abhishek.

"I just want them to do well, I'm there with them like a deputy or colleague," Banerjee said. "It's what they have decided together.

"I should not be announcing this but since all of them are requesting I feel that Sourav Ganguly, who had led India for so many years, should now take charge of the role."

Dalmiya, who was the CAB and BCCI president, passed away on Sunday, leaving the two big posts to fill.

While Ganguly brings with him, not just a sound cricketing and administrative brain, he also comes with a certain start quality that the CAB, no doubt, will want to ride with.

The next question, since the CAB one has been answered, is who will be the new BCCI president -- the most powerful post in Indian cricket.

Rajeev Shukla is the frontrunner for the post, while Amitabh Chaudhury is also a candidate. A meeting will be called by the secretary Anurag Thakur in a few days' time, where the new president will be decided.

Ganguly, whose East Zone will have the biggest say in the elections, will now, no doubt, play a big role in deciding the next BCCI president.
