Seasonal influenza cases rise in Bengaluru due to falling temperatures: All you need to know about symptoms and preventiontwitter

As temperatures dip, Bengaluru is witnessing a steady rise in cases of seasonal influenza and other respiratory infections, with both government and private hospitals reporting increased patient footfall.

Doctors say more patients are seeking treatment for flu-like symptoms such as mild fever, persistent cough, nasal congestion, chest discomfort and headaches. The surge is being attributed largely to changing weather conditions.

According to a report by The Hindu, government hospitals, including Victoria Hospital, have recorded a significant increase in outpatient visits related to influenza-like illness. Medical staff noted that people with underlying conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, diabetes, allergies and heart disease are more vulnerable. A large number of cases involve individuals aged above 65.

Doctors at the State-run Victoria Hospital said, "People with pre-existing conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, diabetes, allergies, and heart disease are particularly vulnerable. More than 40% of those affected are aged over 65."

Patients typically present with mild fever for a day or two, followed by cough, chest congestion, nasal blockage, and headache. Doctors have advised people not to delay medical consultation, even though this coincides with the usual flu season.

Seasonal influenza is a contagious viral infection that spreads through respiratory droplets and contact with contaminated surfaces. It is usually self-limiting and lasts five to seven days.

Health officials warned that infants, senior citizens, pregnant women, immunocompromised individuals, and those on long-term medication, including steroids, face a higher risk of complications and may require hospitalisation.
