Samsung is already enjoying the attention and praise for its Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ smartphones, but the handsets failed to bring the trending dual camera setup aboard. Even though the camera in the new Galaxy S8 series is exceptional, it could be better with two lenses. The Korean tech titan won't leave fans disappointed for long.

Samsung is reportedly planning to bring a dual camera setup for its upcoming Galaxy Note 8 this year. This will be the first smartphone with such camera configuration for Samsung, even though its rivals such as Apple, Huawei and others have already used the tech in their flagships.

It looks like Samsung will take a page from Apple's book for this one, by adding a wide-angle and a telephoto lens at the back. Industry experts suggest the Galaxy Note 8 will have a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens and a 13MP telephoto lens with up to 3x optical zoom, The Korea Herald reported. This setup will ensure a remarkable bokeh effect – a feature that has widely been praised in the iPhone 7 Plus.

Samsung is usually at the forefront of using the latest technology, but it seems to have missed the dual cameras for its Galaxy S8 series. It is important for Samsung to stay on top of things for its Galaxy Note 8 after the major disaster of its predecessor.

Dual cameras are in high demand in the market. LG Innotek and Samsung Electro-Mechanics are two key suppliers of the dual camera modules. While Apple and Huawei source their dual cameras from LG Innotek, Chinese brands like OPPO, Vivo and Xiaomi get their camera modules from Samsung Electro-Mechanics.

The report cited a Japan-based research firm Techno Systems Research about the rise of dual-camera phones to grow from 5 percent last year to 34 percent in 2020 with 600 million shipments.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8's 3x optical zoom is of particular interest. It remains to be seen how well the new flagship will deliver distortion-free images at higher zoom levels, which has been a challenge for several flagship smartphones in the market.

OPPO already demonstrated its 5x Dual Camera Zoom technology at the MWC 2017, which we found to be flawless compared to other smartphones in the market. But the integration of that camera tech in smartphones still has a long way to go. With Samsung focusing on the optical zoom feature, we are keen to find out how the new flagship will stand out in the crowd.

Other than the camera, Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is expected to bring a radical design change, complete with Infinite Display as seen in the Galaxy S8 series, a 6.3-inch display, 4K resolution, and under-the-display fingerprint scanner. After all, Samsung will need to pull every trick to make sure its Galaxy Note 8 is stunning as Apple is expected to bring the 10-anniversary edition of the iPhone this September to steal the limelight.
