The Union Cabinet on Wednesday has approved a bill that restores the original provisions of the SC/ST Act, overturning a Supreme Court ruling that was severely criticised for apparently diluting it.

There is no denying that the Dalits are already at the receiving end of horrifying crimes and shaming in various parts of the country. The SC/ST Act is meant to protect these marginalized communities from atrocities and discrimination.

The Supreme Court order said that the immediate arrest in cases registered under the SC/ST Act was not necessary and that it can follow the preliminary enquiry.

The order, which was passed on March 20, attracted a staunch backlash and resulted in widespread protests across the country. The Modi-led government had been facing immense pressure to act against the apex court's order, and in favour of the Dalits.

The cabinet ministers had assured that laws protecting people belonging to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe categories will not be diluted. The approval of this bill shows some hope for the marginalized groups.

The nature and frequency of crime against Dalits some might say, is increasing. However, it has been stated that the harsh discrimination, moral policing and assault faced by people belonging to marginalised communities often goes unreported due to the stigma they face in lower rungs of the society.
