Nadal blew away Frenchman Benoit Paire in his first hard-court match of the season since the Australian Open quarter-final. After comfortably winning the first set 6-2, Nadal and Paire traded breaks before the Spaniard held his serve at 5-3.

"It is an important victory for me, for my confidence. And, you know. I think I played a solid match," a delighted Nadal said.

"It's important to play matches. It's not about tricks. It's about to play well. These tournaments are so hard. Since the beginning, you play against the top 50 players. So it's a big test from the real first round, no?"

The world number one, who is bidding to defend his US Open title later this month, will be facing a tough test later today against Wawrinka.

The Swiss star has struggled in the ongoing season after recovering from a major knee injury. The 33-year-old is ranked 195 and wasn't lucky enough to receive a first-round bye unlike his opponent on Thursday.

Wawrinka, the three-time Grand Slam champion, had a difficult route to the third round as he lost the first game in both the first and the second round.

He was tested by Nick Kyrgios in the tournament opener and had to save four match points against unseeded Marton Fucsovics.

Nadal starts as the overwhelming favourite to make the quarter-final in Toronto. He has dominated the head-to-head record (16-3) but if Wawrinka manages to find form, expect nothing less than a three-set thriller.
