OnePlus 5
Buying a OnePlus 5 in India may require you an invite, a report suggests.@AndroidPolice via Twitter

If you are familiar with OnePlus smartphones ever since the company first entered the market, you probably know about the invite system that was in place earlier. Since many customers found it inconvenient for buying new OnePlus smartphones, the company had to retire it later. But now it seems that the annoying invites are all set to make a comeback with the new OnePlus 5, at least in India.

As you can see on the official landing page for the OnePlus 5 launch in India, you can buy an invite for the unveiling event which is scheduled to be held in Mumbai on June 22. The invite, for which you need to play Rs. 999, will obviously let you attend the launch event, along with some other perks. But if you are really keen to buy the upcoming OnePlus 5, there's something else that might be a cause of concern for you.

At the end of the list of perks included in the invite, the company clearly mentions that "Invite holders will receive a OnePlus 5 invite code at the launch event."

While there's no more information about the "invite code" on the company website, it's indeed a strong indication that customers will need to have invites to buy the OnePlus 5. However, since there is no official word regarding invites for the new handset, it could well be a move that may apply to certain markets, according to GSM Arena.
