The flow of credit to agriculture sector rose considerably in financial year 2014-15 to over Rs 8.45 lakh crore from Rs 7.31 lakh crore in the previous year, a jump of nearly 15.6%. According to the provisional data compiled by NABARD, Indian banks yet again sanctioned more loans than the target for the year. These agriculture loans include the animal husbandry sub-sector. In 2012-13, the target was Rs 5.75 lakh crore while the loan amount was Rs 6.07 lakh crore, 6% in access. Similalry, the total loan amounts in 2013-14 and 2014-15 were Rs 7.31 lakh crore and Rs 8.45 lakh crore against the targets of Rs 7 lakh crore and Rs 8 lakh crore respectively.

Agricultural Credit Flow on the Rise

The High Courts in India have more vacancies compared to the Supreme Court. Allahabad High Court, which has an approved strength of 160 judges, also has the most number of vacancies. It has vacancy for 82 judges, which is higher than the current working strength of 78. Others like the Hyderabad High Court has 22 vacancies out of 27 while Bombay High Court has 30 out of 94 and Delhi High Court has 20 out of 60. Only Kerala, Maghalaya, Sikkim and Tripura High Courts have no vacancies.

The picture of Aylan Kurdi, one of 12 Syrians who drowned off the coast of Turkey as they tried to reach the EU by boat, has sparked a major concern on the situation of refugees risking lives to escape their countries. The three year old Syrian refugee from Kobane was trying to make his way to Greece along with his family, when he drowned along with his mother and brother.

Access to toilets in India has been making headlines ever since the Modi government launched the Swachh Bharat Campaign. Among Indian states, Kerala (96.19%) has the highest number of rural households with access to toilets. However, other South Indian states like Tamil Nadu (51.68%) and Karnataka (52.33%) are just above average, while Andhra Pradesh (34.68%) and Telangana (39.19%) are below average. The Northern and North Eastern states in the Himalayan belt have higher number of rural households with access to toilets. Himachal Pradesh (82.95%), Haryana (78.15%), Punjab (75.70%) and Uttarakhand (77.59%) fall in the top quarter among North Indian states, while North-Eastern states like Sikkim (95.37%), Mizoram (78.15%), Meghalaya (71.05%), Manipur (68.93%) and Tripura (66.91%) also fall in the top half. However, Eastern Indian states like Odisha (14.98%), Bihar (23.17%) and Jharkhand (33.64%) have the least access to toilets. Larger states like Rajasthan (37.56%), Uttar Pradesh (40.51%) and Madhya Pradesh (35.37%) also fall in the bottom half of the list.
