Petta vs Viswasam day 1 box office collection (Worldwide): Which is the biggest opener?

Rajinikanth's Petta has overpowered Ajith's Viswaam at the worldwide box office on the first day. The collection of Thalaivar's film is higher than the Thala's movie at the global box office, but it has failed to shatter any opening-day records.

Industry insiders say that both the Tamil movies have got good openings at the worldwide box office. Interestingly, the business of Viswasam is little higher than Petta in Tamil Nadu. Whereas the Rajinikanth-starrer has performed far better than Ajith's flick outside its home territory.

On the opening day, Petta is estimated to have grossed around Rs 13 crore, while Viswasam has earned Rs 15+ crore in Tamil Nadu. Notably, the Rajinikanth's flick has outperformed Ajith's movie in Chennai where Thalaivara's film has earned Rs 1.12 crore and Thala's film fetched Rs 88 lakh on the first day.

The fans' shows of Petta on the release day were cancelled in many centres and it had its first show only after 4 am on Thursday, 10 January. Whereas Viswasam had shows as early as 12 am. It helped the Ajith-starrer to perform better than Rajini's flick in Tamil Nadu, opine trade experts. 

In Kerala, Petta is estimated to have grossed somewhere between Rs 1.5+ crore, while Viswasam has raked in between Rs 85-90 lakh. In Karnataka, the Rajinikanth-starrer has earned around Rs 3+ crore and the Ajith's film has fetched over Rs 1.5+ crore.

From rest of the country, Petta has collected around Rs 4.1 crore, while Viswasam has raked in Rs 1 crore. The Rajinikanth's film has beaten the Ajith's film by a big margin at the overseas box office.

Petta has earned over Rs 5.5 crore in the US and Viswasam has raked in Rs 75+ lakh on the first day (includes premieres). Overall, the Rajinikanth's film has earned over Rs 15 crore and Ajith's film has earned Rs 7+ crore at the international box office on the first day.
