The members of the Parsi community in India and many parts of the world, are set to celebrate their new year on Wednesday, Aug. 17.

Significance and how is the day celebrated?

Pateti, the day before the actual Parsi New Year, which is also known as Navroz, is the day of repentance for Parsi community members. They are supposed to clean their minds and start a new year with freshness, regretting the wrong things done over the past year. Devotees observe the auspicious day by visiting the Fire temple wearing new clothes. Houses will be cleaned and Rangoli will be drawn outside the doorstep. Traditional sumptuous food will be prepared as it is a significant part of the celebrations.

On the eve of Parsi New Year, Indian President Pranab Mukherjee has extended his greetings to all his Parsi brothers and sisters.

"On the auspicious occasion of the Parsi New Year, I convey my greetings and good wishes to all my fellow citizens, particularly my Parsi brothers and sisters. The Parsi Community of India has played a major role in the building of our nation and contributed immensely to the development of our country in various spheres, including industry, commerce, trade and education. The Navroz festival signifies the coming of the new and passing of the old. Let us spread goodwill on this day and work hard to make our nation united, secure and prosperous [sic]," Mukherjee posted on his official Facebook page ahead of the new year celebrations.

The special day is also celebrated by visiting friends and family as well as sending wishes and messages to them.
