Christian feast Palm Sunday that marks Jesus Christ's entry into Jerusalem riding on a donkey is observed every year on the last Sunday before Easter. This year, it falls March 20.
Also known as Passion Sunday, Willow Sunday and Flower Sunday, the day is celebrated with devotees carrying palm leaves during the procession signifying the palm branches that were scattered in front of Lord Jesus by his followers as he entered Jerusalem, days before his crucifixion and resurrection. The palms, which are blessed with holy water, are then kept in homes and burnt to create ashes to be used on Ash Wednesday the next year.
Jesus' entry into Jerusalem is mentioned on all four canonical Gospels â€" Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John -- of the Holy Bible. "His disciples brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, "Hosanna to the Son of David. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest heaven!" â€" Matthew 21:9-9

When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus was there, they came, not only on account of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.
