A 20-year-old Pakistani woman set ablaze by a jilted suitor for refusing his marriage proposal died on Tuesday, according to AFP.

Sonia Bibi was doused with petrol and set ablaze by her suitor Latif Ahmed last month after she refused his proposal.

Initial reports also had said that the girl from Basti Malook area of Multan was set on fire by Ahmed - who was also her neighbour - in desperation after he tried to rape her.

Sonia suffered almost 50% burns and was undergoing treatment in Multan's Nishtar hospital in Punjab province. The hospital sources said that she died of her infections on Tuesday.

Cases of rape, murder and other crimes again women are common in some areas of South Punjab.

According to Aurat Foundation, a campaign aimed at improving the lives of women in Pakistan's conservative and patriarchal society, claims that more than 3,000 women have been killed in such attacks since 2008.
