If you thought that the old Rs 500 notes are just a piece of paper after demonetisation, then your thoughts need to change as a lad from Odisha claims to have produced electricity from the old currency. It is capable of powering a household fan. Lachman Dundi, a student at an Odisha science college, said that he used silicon in the old notes to generate electricity.

Lachman highlighted that silicon present in the notes get activated on subjecting them to sunlight for a prolonged period of time. It can in turn be harnessed to generate current. Lachman said that he interfaced a silicon plate to one side of the note to tap the activated silicon elements.

Lachman also claims to have found that prolonged exposure of the old Rs 500 notes to sunlight results in production of almost 5 volts of current. The researcher is also of the opinion that when connected to an external transformer via a conductor, current up to as much as 220 volts could be produced which could potentially come in handy to drive domestic appliances at homes. The current, on proper storage within batteries, would even be fit for use 24 hours a day.

Lachman is now said to be looking for assistance from the Narendra Modi government to pursue more projects aimed at the betterment of society.

As far as demonetisation is concerned, there is a cash crunch as far as availability of the new Rs 500 notes in ATMs in Bangalore is concerned. Officials of banks have expressed confidence that loading of the new note in ATMs across the city would be completed by the end of this week.
