Several factory workers in Uttar Pradesh's Noida Sector 80 clashed with police and hurled stones while demanding a wage hike, a day after violent protests led to massive traffic disruptions across Noida and nearby areas, according to reports.
The unrest continued despite the Uttar Pradesh government announcing an increase in minimum wages across worker categories, with revised rates coming into effect retrospectively from April 1. Officials said the decision was taken after consultations with employers' bodies and labour organisations to ensure a balanced outcome.
Police alleged that "outsiders" attempted to incite violence after workers had initially dispersed peacefully. Several such individuals have been detained, and seven FIRs have been registered in connection with the incidents.
According to a police statement, around 40,000 to 45,000 workers from various sectors gathered at over 80 locations across Noida on Monday, leading to widespread law-and-order issues.
Under the revised structure, the minimum wage for semi-skilled workers in Noida and Ghaziabad has been increased from ₹12,445 to ₹15,059 per month, while for skilled workers it has been raised from ₹13,940 to ₹16,668 per month.
The protests intensified in Noida Phase 2, where clashes broke out following an altercation between workers and police.
Authorities are also probing a possible Pakistan link and have arrested around 350 people so far in connection with the unrest.

Workers involved in the protests claimed they earn less than ₹15,000 per month despite working up to 12 hours a day. They have demanded an eight-hour workday, timely salary payments, overtime compensation, weekly offs, bonuses, and proper grievance redressal mechanisms.

Reports suggest that a recent 35% minimum wage hike in Haryana has further fuelled similar demands among workers in Noida. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as tensions remain high in the industrial hub.
