Nayara Energy, India's largest private fuel retailer, has raised petrol prices by ₹5.30 per litre and diesel by ₹3 per litre amid global energy disruptions caused by the ongoing Iran-US conflict, which has lasted nearly a month.

The conflict has triggered concerns over energy supply, as attacks on facilities and the near shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz have disrupted global oil flows. Petrol and diesel prices in India have been steadily increasing over the past few weeks in response to these developments.

Nayara Energy, which operates 6,967 of India's 102,075 petrol pumps, decided to pass part of the rising input costs to consumers, PTI quoted sources as saying. While the price hike averages ₹5 per litre for petrol and ₹3 per litre for diesel, the effective increase varies by state due to local taxes like VAT. In some areas, petrol prices have risen as high as ₹5.30 per litre.

Unlike state-owned fuel companies, private retailers receive no government compensation for holding back price hikes. Sources said mounting losses have left private firms with little choice but to raise retail prices.

Amid fears of shortages, consumers across several states have been rushing to petrol pumps to refuel vehicles. The LPG supply situation has also led to long queues at filling stations and depots.
