On Tuesday, 6 October, Microsoft unveiled Lumia 950, the company's first true non-Nokia branded flagship smartphone series.
The Lumia 950 series comes with huge upgrade over its predecessor in terms of internal hardware such as camera, display, CPU, battery and many other aspects. To provide a better perspective on the two Lumia siblings, we have done quick specifications run down of Lumia 930 and 950 series.
Lumia 950 series boasts a 5.2-inch WQHD AMOLED display, making it the company's first-ever smartphone to boast 2560x1440p resolution screen. It also features TrueColor and ClearBlack display technology to provide enhanced readability on the screen under direct sunlight.
Lumia 930 series features a tad smaller 5.0-inch screen with full HD (1920x1080p) resolution.
Both the devices come with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 series shield.
Processor, RAM and storage details:
Nokia's Lumia 930 series houses 2.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 series quad-core CPU. It also features 2GB RAM and 32GB inbuilt memory.
The new Lumia 950 comes with Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 series Hexa-core and is backed by Adreno 418 graphics engine, 3GB RAM and 32GB storage.
Mobile Operating System:
Lumia 950 ships with Microsoft's latest Windows 10 out-of-the-box.
Currently, Lumia 930 runs on Windows 8.1 (denim update), but it is confirmed to get the new Windows 10 mobile OS by the end of 2015 or early 2016.
Windows 10 Mobile boasts of advanced digital voice-assistant Cortana, company's all new web-browser Project Spartan, more Quick Actions in Action Center, interactive notifications, full-size background image on lockscreen, refurbished mail, calendar, App Switcher, phone (contacts), messaging, Maps, People App, updated keyboard with period, comma and emoji keys.
The 2014 model Nokia Lumia 930 boasts of a 20.0-megapixel PureView camera with 2X zoom, Zeiss optics, ½.5-inch sensor, dual-LED flash, 26 mm camera focal-length and a 1.2-megapixel snapper on the front, good enough to take quality selfies.
On the other hand, the Microsoft has taken notch-up in the new Lumia 950. The company has incorporated 20MP PureView camera with Carl Zeiss lens, six-lens optics, 1/2.4-inch sensor, 26 mm camera focal length, f/1.9 aperture, natural flash, fifth gen OIS (Optical Image stabilization), auto-focus (two-stage capture feature) and 4K video recording
And on the front, it houses a 5MP wide-angle camera with f/2.4 aperture and full HD camera.
The new Lumia 950 phone houses a high-capacity 3,000 mAh battery, which can run the phone for close to 12 days under standby mode.
Lumia 930 houses a 2,450 mAh cell, which can power the phone for close to 18 days under standby mode.
Windows Hello (Beta) feature:
The new Lumia 950 comes incorporated with a state-of-the-art technology dubbed Windows Hello (Beta). It uses infra-red camera technology to automatically authenticate user to unlock the phone, thus providing an additional layer of security for the phone.
With the help of Microsoft's proprietary display dock accessory, Lumia 930 users can convert the phone in to a mini-computer via Continuum feature. It is a new, adaptive user experience offered in Windows 10 that optimises the look & behaviour of apps and the Windows shell for the physical form factor and customer's usage preferences to provide PC like experience.
Liquid Cooling system:
Microsoft has incorporated an innovative liquid cooling system feature in the small confines of the Lumia 950. It keeps the device's CPU perform efficiently at all times and yet keep the core temperature of the chipset rising beyond optimal temperature, when the user do multi-tasking or play high-intensity games on the phone.
Microsoft, in its bid to provide high quality communication experience on Lumia 950, has included two antennas. The phone has the capability to switch between antennas to provide best possible network connection at any given location.
