A warm microclimate in a 20-kilometre zone in East Antarctica has led to the formation of extensive lakes of meltwater sandwiched between two layers of ice. The ice sheet is showing behaviour that was thought only to occur in glaciers in places such as Greenland, which are not nearly as cold as East Antarctica.
