Suriya's "Masss" aka "'Massu Engira Masilamani" got an overwhelming response at the Chennai box office during the first weekend, beating many movies, including "Tanu Weds Manu Returns". 

As per Behindwoods, "Masss" earned ₹1.84 crore in the first weekend, occupying the first place in box office collections in Chennai during 29-31 May from 381 shows.

Arulnithi's horror-thriller "Demonte Colony" was in the second position, earning ₹27 lakh from 102 shows to take its total box office collections to ₹1.41 crore after the second weekend.

Jyothika's "36 Vayadhinile" earned ₹9.42 lakh to take its tally to ₹2 crore by the end of its third weekend.

Madhavan starrer Bollywood film "Tanu Weds Manu Returns"  earned ₹31.27 lakh from 39 shows during the weekend.

"Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai" (₹1.35 lakh) and Bollywood film "Piku" (₹1.17 lakh) are the other films that did reasonable business during the weekend.

According to early trade reports, "Masss" had a fantastic weekend across Tamil Nadu, earning ₹17.5 crore. On the release day, the film earned ₹5.35 crore. The collections saw a dip on Saturday as the film raked in ₹4.90 crore. However, the Tamil movie had a fantastic Sunday by earning ₹7.05 crore.

"Masss" has received positive reviews from the audience and critics. The Tamil movie has been appreciated for its thrilling elements, good story and Suriya's performance. Directed by Venkat Prabhu and produced by Gnanavel Raja, the film has Nayantara and Pranitha as female leads.

Reports say that the Telugu version "Rakshasudu" of the film has also received good response from Tollywood audience.
