Priyanka Chopra's "Mary Kom" had a good opening weekend, as it grossed around ₹27.22 crore from domestic box office. The box office earnings of the biopic showed good growth on Saturday and Sunday.

The film showed growth of around 15 to 20 percent on Saturday and Sunday.

The film is a biopic based on Olympic gold medalist Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom. Biopic is one genre which usually doesn't attract much crowd, but "Mary Kom" with its successful box office run has proved the theory completely wrong.

Here is the opening weekend breakup of the film: Friday ₹8.02 crore, Saturday ₹9.2 crore and Sunday ₹10 crore.

The women centric film was thrashed by critics, but audience gave positive feedback. The film is running mostly due to word of mouth from moviegoers.

Mumbai, Delhi, UP, East Punjab and West Bengal contributed their best to the opening weekend box office collection of Omung Kumar's directorial debut .

The opening weekend total of "Mary Kom" is highest for any women centric film released till today. Even the sex-horror genre films, which features actresses in the lead, has failed to show growth and earn like "Mary Kom", according to Box Office India.

Meanwhile, the makers of the film are happy that "Mary Kom" has managed to impress audience.

"Mary Kom has delivered a strong opening day and set a new first day benchmark for heroine-centric films. The word of mouth is positive and Priyanka's standout performance has touched a chord with audiences across sections," Ajit Andhare, chief operating officer, Viacom18 Motion Pictures, said, according to IANS.

The lead actress, Chopra, too is happy with the box office performance of the film.

"What a weekend for #MaryKom . Thank you all.. I truly home that the story of our true champ @MangteC has a wonderful run at the box office," she tweeted on Monday.

"Thank you for the incredible response to #MaryKom I guess this film was such a heart wrenching experience that the love is just overwhelming."
