Ace director Mani Ratnam, who is basking in the success of his latest outing "O Kadhal Kanmani", (OK Kanmani/OK Bangaram) turns 60 on Tuesday, 2 June.

Beginning his career as writer and director for the Kannada film "Pallavi Anu Pallavi" in 1983, the veteran has done some notable projects during an illustrious career spanning 32 years, making him one of the best directors in the industry.

Mani Ratnam is known for his romantic and thriller films such as "Anjali" (1990), "Roja" (1992), "Thiruda Thiruda" (1993) and the latest superhit Ok Kanmani" featuring Dulquer Salmaan and Nithya Menen in lead roles.

"Roja"

"Roja", the romantic drama film based on terrorism in Kashmir starring Arvind Swamy and Madhoo, is one of the evergreen films in India. The film won three National Film Awards in 1992. AR Rahman's music and the songs "Chinna Chinna Aasai", "Kaadhal Rojave", "Pudhu Vellai Mazhai" are still favourites of music lovers in India.

"Bombay"

Arvind Swamy and Manisha Koirala starrer "Bombay" dealt with the Babri Masjid demolition, which later led to riots in Bombay in 1992-1993. The 1995 film became a huge blockbuster and was also dubbed in Hindi. AR Rahman's music and the songs "Uyire Uyire", "Kuchi Kuchi", "Kannalanae" became hugely popular.

"Iruvar"

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan made her debut in cinema with Mani Ratnam's political  drama "Iruvar" opposite Mohanlal in 1997. The film is considered one of the best in the ace director's career. "Iruvar", which showed the relationship between cinema and politics in Tamil Nadu, also had Prakash Raj, Tabu, Gouthami, Revathi and Nassar in significant roles.

"Dil Se..."

Shah Rukh Khan and Manisha Koirala starrer "Dil Se...", also based on terrorism, was his third film in the genre. Preity Zinta made her debut with the thriller in 1998. The film received lot of accolades, including two National Film Awards and six Filmfare Awards.

"Alaipayuthey"

R Madhavan and Shalini mesmerised the audience with their chemistry in the 2000 release "Alaipayuthey". Mani Ratnam's magic and AR Rahman's music were the major highlights of the romantic film. The film made roaring business at both Tamil and Telugu box offices.
