The equation is simple for Kolkata Knight Riders, who are set to face Sunrisers Hyderabad at Eden Gardens in Kolkata if they manage to emerge triumphant on Sunday. Defeating SRH would result in KKR grabbing the playoff spot, but a loss will make matters complicated as the net run rate could come into play. SRH, on the other hand, can finish in the top two and get two chances to reach the final if they defeat KKR.
However, the all-important game in Kolkata might be dampened by the weather as it has been raining for the last two days in the city. KKR need not fear the rain as a washout will enable them to qualify for the playoffs, but the Gautam Gambhir-led side will be keen to reach the last four with a good win against SRH.
KKR might have been below par in the last few matches, but make no mistake, they have been one of the best teams in the competition. They have quality players like Gambhir, Robin Uthappa and Yusuf Pathan. The trio will need to be on top of their game against SRH. KKR are a good batting side, but they failed against Gujarat Lions in the crucial fixture, which led to a loss, but KKR assistant coach Simon Katich is confident ahead of the SRH game.
"Everyone was disappointed with the result the other night. A loss like that does not mean we are a bad team. We have to regroup and start again. Our batsmen have been in good form. They just had a disappointing game the other night but that does not make them bad players. Hopefully they will come back with a positive mindset," Cricbuzz quoted Katich as saying.
KKR bowlers including Sunil Narine and Morne Morkel also need to shine against SRH, who have some incredible batsmen in their line-up.
Sunrisers Hyderabad will depend on their top order, including David Warner, who has scored 640 runs in IPL 2016, and Shikhar Dhawan. But, if the openers fail, other senior pros like Eoin Morgan and Yuvraj Singh need to play a key role with the bat in the game.
Very rarely has Warner failed in IPL 2016, hence he will be one the key men for the team. The Australian has provided flying starts to his team in the competition, but their middle order has not been consistent, which is a cause for concern heading into the crucial stage of the IPL.
Along with Warner, their bowlers have been brilliant, and helped them win a number of matches as well. Mustafizur Rahman has been the standout bowler for SRH, and another impressive display from him could help his team register their ninth win this season.
The SRH will be keen for a victory against KKR, and head into the playoffs with immense confidence. However, all eyes will be on the home team. Can KKR shine and bring smiles to their fans in the City of Joy?
