'Khera Ka Peda Bana Dunga': Himanta Biswas mocks Pawan Khera, warns him of sending him to jail if elected again; viral videoTwitter

With Assam awaiting the results of vote counting scheduled for May 4, attention has turned to key political figures in the Assembly election race. One of the most closely watched leaders is Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who has often made headlines for his sharp and controversial remarks against opposition leaders.

Sarma's remarks on Pawan Khera

During an interaction with the media, Sarma took a dig at Congress leader Pawan Khera, saying, "Pawan Khera ko main Pawan peda bana dunga," implying he would reduce him politically.

The remark came after Khera, along with Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi, made allegations regarding assets and foreign connections linked to Sarma's wife. The claims drew a strong reaction from the Chief Minister, escalating the political confrontation.

In another statement, Sarma warned that if re-elected, Khera could face legal consequences, further intensifying the exchange between the two leaders.

Legal battle reaches courts

The dispute soon moved to the courts after an FIR was filed against Khera, accusing him of forgery and defamation. Khera sought legal protection, and a bench of Justices J.K. Maheshwari and Atul S. Chandurkar granted him pre-arrest bail, emphasising that personal liberty is a fundamental right and should not be curtailed lightly, especially in politically sensitive cases.

The court directed Khera to cooperate with the investigation and restricted him from leaving the country without permission.

Earlier, Khera had publicly alleged that Sarma's wife held foreign citizenship and owned assets abroad. However, these claims were rejected by Sarma and his wife, who termed the documents presented as fabricated and initiated legal action.

Khera subsequently sought transit anticipatory bail from the Telangana High Court before approaching higher courts for relief. The matter later reached the Supreme Court, which advised him to seek appropriate relief from the Guwahati High Court.

The court also observed that the allegations appeared to be politically motivated, while noting that Sarma, too, had made strong remarks against Khera in public statements.

Political backdrop

As Assam heads into the results phase, this high-profile clash highlights the sharp political rhetoric and legal battles that have marked the election season. The outcome of the polls will determine whether Sarma secures another term amid both political support and controversy.
