A major political transition is underway in Karnataka after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah resigned from his post, paving the way for Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar to emerge as the frontrunner for the state's top position.
The resignation, accepted by Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot, has resulted in the dissolution of the Council of Ministers and triggered discussions within the Congress party over the formation of a new government. Reports indicate that the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) is expected to formally elect Shivakumar as its leader, following consultations with the party's central leadership.
The leadership change comes after months of speculation over a possible power-sharing arrangement within the ruling Congress. Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar have jointly led the government since the party's victory in the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections, with Siddaramaiah serving as Chief Minister and Shivakumar as Deputy Chief Minister.
In an emotional public message following Siddaramaiah's resignation, Shivakumar praised the veteran leader's contribution to Karnataka and described him as a guiding force whose leadership would continue to inspire the party. The gesture was seen as an attempt to project unity and ensure a smooth transition amid intense political scrutiny.
While Shivakumar's elevation appears imminent, the Congress leadership now faces the challenge of balancing regional, caste and factional interests while finalising cabinet portfolios, deputy chief minister positions and organisational appointments within the state unit. Senior leaders have reportedly begun lobbying for key positions in the new administration.
Political observers believe the transition will test the Congress party's ability to maintain internal cohesion while sustaining its governance agenda in one of its most important states. With the leadership issue nearing resolution, attention is now shifting towards cabinet formation and the government's future policy priorities.
