The J&K Police has detained a man who attempted to hoist the tricolor at Srinagar's commercial hub, Lal Chowk on Tuesday morning just a day ahead of the India's Independence Day.

The incident happened when the man tried to hoist the national flag at the historic Ganta Ghar (clock tower), which according to sources, did not go down well with the locals.

The eyewitnesses told the International Business Times, India that a few locals objected to the hoisting of tricolor and prevented the man, (whose identity could not be ascertained ) from doing the same.

People also raised pro-pakistan slogans and snatched the national flag from the man, the sources revealed.

The police immediately rushed to the spot and arrested the non-local along with two locals.

The security arrangements have been tightened in and around Srinagar city on August 14 and 15 when Pakistan and India celebrate their Independence Days respectively.

Pertinently, this is not the first time that an attempt has been made to hoist the tricolor in the busy Lal Chowk area of Srinagar.

Last year, several Shiv Sena activists were also detained when they tried to hoist the tricolor.

In 2016, a 15-year-old girl from Ludhiana, Punjab, Jhanvi Behal had vowed to unfurl the national flag at Lal Chowk after a top militant commander, Burhan Wani was killed. However, she was sent back by the authorities after she reached Srinagar airport along with several others to avoid any disturbance in law and order situation.
