Ghulam Mohammad Mir, a sarpanch in Jammu and Kashmir's Sopore town, was kidnapped on Friday night and later shot dead.

According to NDTV reports, gunmen stormed into the house of Lone and dragged him out of the house in front of his family. His body was later discovered near his house.

It is the third incident of a sarpanch being murdered in the last month in Jammu and Kashmir.

Lone was probably targeted because of providing information which led to the killing of militants recently.

The fourth phase of assembly elections is due in the state on Sunday.
