Gunmen opened fire at a police team in Bandipora district of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, killing one police officer.

The militants fired at the state police's Special Operations Group (SOG) men while they were looking for the mastermind of the Udhampur terror attack. The SOG team had reached Dachina village after reportedly getting intelligence inputs that some militants were holed up there.

A sub-inspector succumbed to his injuries in Wednesday's firing. He had been airlifted to a hospital but was declared dead.

"Sub-inspector Altaf Ahmad was injured in the attack. Arrangements were made to airlift the injured officer to Srinagar for treatment," a police officer told IANS.

The incident comes days after four Indian Army soldiers were killed in a gun battle with militants in Kupwara district earlier this week.
