The theme this year is "Yoga for Health," and according to the UN, "highlights the fact that yoga can contribute in a holistic way to achieving an equilibrium between mind and body."

The event, being held at the Ramabai Ambedkar Maidan — also called the Ramabai Rally Sthal — in Lucknow, is being telecast LIVE across several media, on radio, on TV as well as online. You can watch the LIVE telecast HERE , from 6:20 am IST.

8:10 am IST: Even our jawans are practising yoga, and setting the bar at quite a high altitude!

8:05 am IST: UNESCO weighs in on World Yoga Day.

8 am IST: Modi now makes his way towards the exit, all time time waving back at people who are waving towards him.

7:55 am IST: Modi is now greeted by officials, and then makes his way towards the podium and waves at the youngsters.

7:27 am IST: Now the sitting asanas begin in Lucknow.

7:25 am IST: As Modi performs asanas in Lucknow, leaders from the BJP perform yoga in their own corners of the country.

7:20 am IST: The asanas begin, with Taalasan or Taadasan.

Modi and those around him seem to be either out of synch with the rest of the crowd, or are doing asanas chosen just for them.

7:18 am IST: The warm-ups continue, for the limbs, the head and other parts of the body.

7:12 am IST: Warm-up begins. It is supposed to increase blood circulation across the body.

Modi, meanwhile, has taken his place among the people and is following the instructions, along with everyone else.

7:10 am IST: We are now preparing for the main asanas. It starts with a prayer.

7:07 am IST: The prime minister now makes his way to among the people to perform yoga. The rain does not seem to matter for him.

7:05 am IST: "We can make yoga as much a part of our lives as salt," says Modi. Salt??

Modi explained: "Life cannot be sustained on salt alone, but life without salt is imposible to sustain."

7:02 am IST: "Wellness is more important than health and fitness, and yoga is the way to wellness," says Modi. He adds: "Nowhere in the world is yoga put under question."

Modi also says: "We feel many sleeping organs wake up when we do yoga." Another push for wellness.

7 am IST: And here it is, the answer to the "no job creation" jibe by Opposition! Modi says yoga is creating jobs not only in India but also across the world.

6:57 am IST: "Yoga is helping the world connect with India," says Modi. He points out that countries that do not know Indian culture and history are also connecting to the country through yoga.

6:55 am IST: Modi speaks on a lighter vein. "People of Lucknow have shown me how to use yoga mats in the event of rain," he says.

People are using yoga mats to shield themselves in the open-air venue as the rain falls intermittently.

6:50 am IST: Yogi Adityanath seems to trip up a bit, calling Lucknow the "capital of India."

4 am IST: It's still a few hours before Prime Minister Narendra arrives at the Ramabai Ambedkar Maidan to practise yoga with 51,000 people on the occasion of the third edition of the International Day of Yoga.
