India and Malaysia on Sunday announced a series of initiatives aimed at strengthening cooperation in defence, security, semiconductors and trade following wide-ranging talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

After the meeting, Prime Minister Modi said that India and Malaysia share a "special relationship" and reaffirmed both countries' commitment to expanding ties across multiple sectors. He also reiterated India's firm stance on terrorism, stating that there should be "no double standards and no compromise" in combating the global threat.

Prime Minister Modi arrived in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday and was accorded a grand red-carpet welcome, with Prime Minister Ibrahim personally receiving him at the airport. Earlier on Sunday, Modi was given a ceremonial welcome at Perdana Putra ahead of the bilateral talks.

Highlighting historical and cultural bonds, Modi said India and Malaysia are maritime neighbours with centuries-old people-to-people ties. He noted that Malaysia is home to the world's second-largest population of people of Indian origin, adding that shared civilisation, cultural heritage and democratic values continue to bind the two nations.

During the discussions, both sides agreed to strengthen cooperation in counter-terrorism, intelligence sharing and maritime security. Modi also reiterated India's commitment to working with ASEAN to promote development, peace and stability across the Indo-Pacific region, which he described as an emerging global growth engine.

Prime Minister Ibrahim, for his part, said India and Malaysia are steadily expanding collaboration in trade, investment, connectivity and defence. He highlighted India's significant rise on the global economic and trade front and expressed confidence that defence cooperation between the two countries would become more comprehensive in the coming years.

Both leaders also agreed to deepen partnerships in emerging areas such as artificial intelligence, digital technologies, semiconductors, healthcare and food security, reflecting a shared vision for future-oriented cooperation.
