"Happy New Year" is one of the biggest film of the year and with all the hype surrounding it, it is expected to lead the box office by storm. Since it is one the biggest release, the business of the films will be compared with previous commercially successful films.

In the past two years, films like "Chennai Express", "Dhoom 3" and "Kick" have made records and now "Happy New Year" is expected to beat all the records and take the top position.

It remains to be seen whether the film will break the previous records, but we have compiled the reasons why the film's box office earnings are compared to previous releases.

Why Chennai Express?
"Chennai Express" is Shah Rukh's last film released in 2013 and thus the box office collection of both the films are compared. "Chennai Express" was the first film of 2013 to cross the ₹200 crore mark in India and beat "3 Idiots". It is Shah Rukh's highest grosser film till now in India.

Why Dhoom 3?
Aamir Khan's "Dhoom 3" was a blockbuster hit movie of last year. The film shattered all the records created by "Chennai Express" and "Krrish 3" and became the highest grosser film of the year. The box office performance of big-budget movie starring A-listers of Bollywood, especially Khans, are compared with the last highest grosser film. And thus "Happy New Year" and "Dhoom 3" box office collections will be compared.

Since "Happy New Year" has created a very strong hype, it is expected to shatter the records created by "Dhoom 3". But it all remains on how the film opens and how strong the word of mouth is.

Why Kick?
Whether or not Salman Khan and Shah Rukh compete with each other, there is always a competition between the fans of the two stars. So whether or not trade analysts compare the box office earnings of the two films, their fans will definitely compare it.

Also, "Kick" is the highest grosser film of 2014 and again "Happy New Year" is expected to beat that record and come on top position.
