India is celebrating Mahatma Gandhi's 147th birth anniversary on 2 October. The non-violence follower had a big part to play to make our country free.

The simple-looking man shook the Britishers to the core, but without any violence. On 2 October every year, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi's birth anniversary is celebrated with great fervour.

Though it is considered as a national holiday, several schools and colleges organise cultural programmes to pay a tribute to this legend.

Popularly known as the "Father of the Nation", his birth anniversary is also celebrated as the International Day of Non-Violence worldwide, as announced by UN General Assembly.

Gandhi. also known as Bapu, died on 30 January when a Hindu nationalist, Nathuram Godse, shot him.

However, he is still remembered by his well-wishers.

To commemorate the day, Bollywood celebs have wished 'Happy Gandhi Jayanti' on their Twitter handles.
