The Boeing Co 787 Dreamliner takes its first paying passengers aloft on Wednesday, showing off a carbon-composite design its maker says is lighter, more economical to fly and more comfortable than its metal rivals currently plying the airways. The special charter flight by the twin-engined jet from Tokyo to Hong Kong comes after years of delays as Boeing engineers had to deal with glitches and parts delays, leaving some $16 billion of inventory at Boeing's plants.Reuters

India will soon get the most fuel-efficient and twin-engine aircraft, Boeing 787 Dreamliner airplanes.

The decision to induct the "super-efficient" airplanes was decided by the government Thursday. A total of 27 Boeing 787 Dreamliners will be inducted in the first phase.

Announcing the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) decision on clearing a turnaround plan package of the Rs 30,000 crore for Air India, Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh said that India would receive its first Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft in the next two weeks.

According to the manufacturing company Boeing, the airbus have the capacity to carry 210-250 passengers on routes of 7,650 to 8,200 nautical miles (14,200 to 15,200 kilometers) while the 787-9 Dreamliner will carry 250 -290 passengers on routes of 8,000 to 8,500 nautical miles (14,800 to 15,750 kilometers).

One aspect of the most awaited aircraft is its unmatched fuel efficiency. The manufacturer claims the plane uses 20 percent less fuel compared to other airplanes of the same size.

Its distinguishing features include a four-panel windshield, noise-reducing chevrons on its engine nacelles and a smoother nose contour.

Passengers will also see improvements, from an interior environment with higher humidity to increased comfort and convenience.

Composite fuselage, larger cabin windows (27 by 47 cm), a higher eye level so passengers can maintain a view of the horizon, fluorescent tubes were replaced by light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and electrochromism-based auto-dimming glasses are among some of the equipments and facilities inside the 787's cabin.

Boeing is bringing the 787 Dreamliner commercial airplanes at different sizes of big-jet range to mid-size airplanes.

The development and production of the Dreamliner involved a large scale collaboration and supplies from across the world. After the major parts for the plane are pre-assembled in different locations, they will be shipped to Boeing's Everett assembly factory in Washington.

Out of 855 total orders as of 2012 March 26, 2012 Boeing has delivered only eight Dreamliner aircraft.
