Focus on Strait of Hormuz amid rising tensions
During the discussion, PM Modi highlighted the importance of restoring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz while ensuring maritime safety. The conversation comes in the backdrop of heightened tensions following reported US-Israel joint military strikes on Iran.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world's most vital shipping corridors, handling a significant share of global oil and gas trade. Any disruption in this narrow waterway can have immediate consequences for global energy markets, freight movement, insurance costs, and overall trade flows.

Diplomatic Developments in the Region
The call between Modi and Macron comes shortly after a high-level Pakistani delegation, led by Asim Munir, arrived in Tehran on Wednesday, April 15. The visit is being seen as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to revive a second round of negotiations between the United States and Iran after the first round failed to yield a consensus. The earlier round of talks was held in Islamabad last week.
Amid rising geopolitical tensions, several countries have called for de-escalation and the protection of commercial shipping routes, given the wider global impact of the conflict.
