US President Donald Trump has triggered a major political controversy after issuing a profanity-laden threat against Iran's power and energy infrastructure on Truth Social. His remarks, which came alongside a 48-hour deadline for Iran to strike a deal and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, have sparked sharp reactions across the US political spectrum β with some leaders even calling for invoking Section 4 of the 25th Amendment.
In his post, Trump warned that Tuesday would be "power plant day and bridge day all wrapped in one" in Iran, suggesting large-scale strikes on infrastructure. He issued an aggressive ultimatum, using explicit language and setting a final deadline for compliance, while warning of severe consequences if Iran failed to act.
Marjorie Taylor Greene, once a staunch Trump ally, strongly criticised the president, saying someone needs to intervene in his "madness." Writing on X, she said Trump had "gone insane" and accused others of being complicit.
While clarifying she was not defending Iran, Greene argued that Israel is capable of defending itself and warned that attacking Iran's infrastructure would harm civilians. She added that such actions contradict promises made to American voters, calling them "evil" rather than aligned with making America great again.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer described Trump's remarks as those of someone "unhinged," warning that such rhetoric could alienate allies and potentially violate international norms. He said the president's conduct does not reflect American values.
Independent Senator Bernie Sanders called the comments "dangerous" and "mentally unbalanced," urging Congress to act immediately to prevent further escalation.
Democratic Senator Bob Duff also criticised Trump's statements, warning they reflected poor judgment and could endanger American lives. He called on Republicans to consider constitutional measures, including the 25th Amendment or action under Article II, Section 4.

Senator Chris Murphy described Trump's remarks as "completely unhinged," suggesting Cabinet members should consider invoking the 25th Amendment.
Congressman Ro Khanna accused Trump of threatening war crimes while failing US troops. Senator Tim Kaine called the language "embarrassing and juvenile."
Congresswoman Yassamin Ansari labelled Trump a "serious threat" to national and global security, while Representative Melanie Stansbury urged Congress and the Cabinet to act. Illinois Governor J. B. Pritzker said Trump is mentally unfit to lead and called for immediate action under the 25th Amendment.
Betting markets react
Prediction markets have also reflected rising uncertainty. Platforms tracking the likelihood of Trump's removal have seen increased activity, with traders speculating on whether Cabinet-level action could be initiated.
What is the 25th Amendment?
The 25th Amendment to the United States Constitution, ratified in 1967 after the assassination of John F. Kennedy, outlines procedures for presidential succession.
- Sections 1 & 2: Confirm that the Vice President assumes office if the presidency becomes vacant.
- Section 3: Allows a president to temporarily transfer power during medical procedures.
- Section 4: Enables the Vice President and Cabinet to declare the president unfit, making the Vice President Acting President. If disputed, it requires a two-thirds majority in Congress to uphold the decision.
Notably, Section 4 has never been invoked in US history.
