
Fifty-two Jammu and Kashmir Police officers and personnel have been conferred gallantry and service medals on the occasion of the 76th Republic Day, an official said here on Sunday.
In an official statement issued by a spokesperson, the list included 17 officers who received the Medal for Meritorious Service, 33 personnel who were conferred the Medal for Gallantry, while two officers of the rank of Deputy Inspector General received the President's Medal for Distinguished Service.
"Among those awarded the Medal for Meritorious Service are three Inspectors General of Police — Mohd Suleman Choudhary, Sujit Kumar and Vivek Gupta," the statement said.
It further said that other recipients include Deputy Superintendents of Police Himat Singh, Champa Devi Sharma, and Khushwant Singh; Inspector Anil Sharma; DSP Gurmeet Singh; Inspector Reyaz Ahmad Langoo; Assistant Sub-Inspector Sham Lal; Head Constable Gopal Singh; Inspectors Sardar Singh, Neeraj Kumar Koul, and Mushtaq Ahmad Bhat; Constables Tawheed Ahmad Thoker and Shubh Kumar; and Assistant Sub-Inspector Balwinder Singh Bali.

"In addition, two senior officers — Deputy Inspectors General of Police Haseeb Mughal and Nisha Nathyal — were conferred the President's Medal for Distinguished Service," it said, adding that 33 J&K Police personnel were awarded the Medal for Gallantry for acts of bravery in the line of duty.
"The recipients include Deputy Superintendents of Police Javaid Ahmad Lone, Mohd Ashrif and Mohan Lal; Inspector Younis Khan; Assistant Sub-Inspector Davinder Kumar; Head Constable Shabeer Ahmad Narwaroo; and several other officers and personnel across ranks," the statement further said.
The gallantry awardees also include IPS officer Tanushree, Senior Superintendent of Police Shabir Nawab, and a number of inspectors, head constables, selection grade constables, and constables from various districts and units of the force.
982 Police Personnel Awarded Service Medals
On the occasion of Republic Day 2026, gallantry and various service medals have been awarded to 982 personnel from the police, fire, home guards, civil defence, and correctional services.
The decorations included 125 gallantry medals (GM), the Union Home Ministry said in a statement. The maximum number of bravery medals — 45 — have been given to personnel deployed in the Jammu and Kashmir operations theatre, followed by 35 from Naxal violence-affected areas and five posted in the North-East region.

Four fire service rescuers are among the gallantry medal winners, it said.
A breakup provided in the official statement said that the Jammu and Kashmir Police received the highest number of gallantry medals at 33, followed by the Maharashtra Police at 31, Uttar Pradesh Police at 18, and Delhi Police at 14.
Among the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), the CRPF is the only force to receive bravery citations, with 12 medals.
The list also includes 101 President's Medals for Distinguished Service (PSM) and 756 Medals for Meritorious Service (MSM) awarded to officers and personnel.
As per the guidelines, a bravery medal is awarded for rare and conspicuous acts of gallantry, including saving life and property, preventing crime or arresting criminals, with the risk incurred assessed in relation to the duties of the officer concerned.
The PSM is awarded for a specially distinguished record of service, while the MSM is awarded for valuable service characterised by resourcefulness and devotion to duty, the statement said.
LG congratulates J&K Police, correctional staff honoured with gallantry awards
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha extended heartfelt congratulations to the officers and personnel of Jammu and Kashmir Police who were honoured with the Medal for Gallantry, the President's Medal for Distinguished Service, and the Medal for Meritorious Service on the occasion of Republic Day 2026.
In a post on X, the LG also congratulated the personnel of the Jammu and Kashmir Correctional Service who were awarded the Medal for Meritorious Service. He said the nation holds the courage, dedication, and professionalism of J&K Police in the highest regard and praised their unwavering commitment to duty.
LG Manoj Sinha said the valour and integrity of the police force continue to serve as a beacon of pride for the country and expressed hope that their exemplary service would inspire future generations.
